Global Financial Centres Index 09/2010

Frankfurt convinces with stability

The current edition of the Global Financial Centres Index (GFCI) reconfirms the financial centre of Frankfurt's outstandingly high level of stability. The authors include the city in the group of "stable" financial centres to which only six further financial centres belong, alongside Frankfurt. In addition, Frankfurt is included in the exclusive circle of "Global Leaders" - only eight centres around the world enjoy this status.

The stability of the strongest German financial centre by far is also reflected in the score. With a marginal loss of one point, the assessment remained almost the same. This performance gave Frankfurt a two-rank higher position to eleventh place. Yet the eighth-ranked Zürich is only ten points ahead of Frankfurt and even Chicago, in seventh position, has only a 19 point lead. The ranking is led as usual by London (772 points, first place) and New York (770 points, second place). However an Asian centre could soon make it to the top for the first time: with 760 points, Hongkong already has the two Anglo-Saxons in its sights.

Meanwhile, the financial centre of Frankfurt should not be afraid of the future. It can, for example, sell itself through its particular strengths in increasingly important areas such as risk management and regulation: To take the views of respondents from the "Government & Regulatory" sector as a basis, Frankfurt holds sixth place in the world. Similarly positive are the panel participants from the banking sector who put Frankfurt in the top 10 overall.
